The Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) is a new revenue tool to grow the tourism economy in the City of Thunder Bay and is already established in many destinations across Canada and the globe.
The objective of the MAT is to support the development of new and enhanced visitor experiences. The tax will provide the opportunity to reach new markets, to increase visitation to the city across our leisure, corporate and sport markets as well as increase the length of stay of visitors through a wider range of attractions, events and improved tourism infrastructure.
In the implementation of the MAT, the Community Economic Development Commission created the CEDC Tourism Development Fund to direct funds for tourism marketing and promotion including product development managed by the CEDC's tourism division - Tourism Thunder Bay.
